Old Wiring Types: Rewire Needed or Just Old-Looking?

Not all old wiring is equally concerning, and not all modern-looking wiring is necessarily fine — but there are a few genuinely reliable visual indicators that help you understand roughly what era of electrical installation you're dealing with, even before an EICR gives you the full picture.

The Main Types You'll Encounter
VIR (Vulcanised India Rubber) cable — pre-1960s Black rubber-insulated cable, common from the early 1900s through the 1950s-60s. The rubber insulation degrades with age, becoming brittle and cracking, which exposes bare conductors. If you see this cable type anywhere accessible, treat it as a strong indicator that a full rewire is needed, regardless of how the rest of the installation looks.
Fabric-insulated (cloth-covered) cable — similar era to VIR Often found alongside VIR cable, sometimes on lighting circuits specifically. Same concern: the insulation degrades and becomes a genuine safety risk over decades.
Lead-sheathed cable — early-to-mid 20th century Distinctive grey metal outer sheath. Like VIR and fabric cable, this indicates a very old installation that's almost certainly due, or overdue, for full replacement.
PVC-insulated and sheathed cable (grey twin-and-earth) — 1960s to 2004 The standard for decades and still perfectly safe if in good condition, though older installations from this era may lack modern safety features like RCD (residual current device) protection, which is now standard. This doesn't automatically mean a rewire is needed — it depends on the specific installation's condition and whether RCD protection can be added at the consumer unit.
Modern low-smoke PVC cable (often with a different colour coding for newer installations, post-2004) — current standard, and typically indicates a relatively recent, compliant installation.
Other Visual Clues Beyond the Cable Itself
- Round-pin sockets — a strong indicator of a pre-1960s installation that likely hasn't been comprehensively updated
- A fuse-wire fusebox rather than a consumer unit with circuit breakers/RCDs — even if the cabling looks reasonable, an old-style fusebox is itself a strong sign the whole installation predates modern safety standards
- Very few sockets per room — older installations, before modern appliance-heavy usage, often have noticeably fewer sockets, sometimes compensated for with a tangle of extension leads, itself a minor fire risk worth noting
- Surface-mounted conduit on solid-wall properties — not a safety issue in itself, but tells you the wiring was likely retrofitted rather than chased in during a full rewire
What This Means for Cost
If you can see VIR, fabric-insulated or lead-sheathed cable anywhere accessible (even just in the loft, where older circuits are often easiest to spot), budget for a full rewire regardless of what an initial EICR on a limited sample of circuits suggests — these cable types are typically installation-wide, not just in the one place you happened to see them.
If the visible wiring is grey PVC twin-and-earth in reasonable condition, a full rewire is less likely to be necessary — the more relevant question becomes whether RCD protection exists at the consumer unit, which is a far smaller job to add if missing.

Is round-pin socket wiring always unsafe?
It's a strong indicator of a pre-1960s installation, and while age alone doesn't automatically mean danger, installations from this era very often also have degraded rubber or fabric cable insulation and lack modern safety features, so it's a strong prompt to get a full EICR before assuming it's fine.
Can RCD protection be added without a full rewire?
Yes, in many cases — if the existing cable insulation and general wiring condition is sound (typically grey PVC twin-and-earth from the 1960s onwards), adding RCD protection is usually just a consumer unit upgrade, a far smaller job than a full rewire.
